The Best Things To Do In Kerry
This guide is broken down with a quick run-through of the best things to do in Kerry, like The Ring Of Kerry and all those hikes/ walks!
In section two we finally get into some stunning spots to visit in Kerry, including Gleninchaquin Park and Valentia Island.
1. The Ring of Kerry
The Ring of Kerry, probably the most famous driving and cycling route in Ireland. It is a 179 km circular route that leads us to dozens of the most beautiful salients in the county.
There are coastal sites, rural areas/towns/villages and mountains that you have never seen if this is your first time hitting the road on it.
The route covers quite a few towns and countless popular Kerry attractions in addition to lovely towns := Kenmare, along with villages.
Don’t have a car? You can book a bunch of tours for the Ring of Kerry .

2. The Skellig Ring
Skellig Ring – A little known, 18km circular route linking Waterville with Portmagee village via Ballinskelligs.
Look out for that raw, rugged beauty though; drinkers and jagged silhouettes like Skellig Michael are thankfully never too far away from the horizon.
Skellig Ring route is an easy, no hassle drive which just happens to be seriously stunning!
If you go this route, you will discover some of the best places to visit in Kerry that a lot of people forget all about (like Coomanaspig for example!)

3. The Dingle Peninsula
Dingle Peninsula — With the charming Dingle Town at its core, this region is swamped with summer holidayers.
There are loads to see, and how you explore is really up to the individual – most take a version of the Dingle Peninsula Drive. This follows that coast all the way round until it meets in with main land at about 10 miles west from Dingle Town.
The route then winds its way along the coast, and onto that breathtaking Slea Head drive (where you can see some of Kerry’s best things to do like Gallarus Oratory).
However, if you need a base for your trip then stay in one of the many Dingle hotels or Dingle B&Bs. You can then round it off with a whiskey back in a traditional Dingle Pub, something like Foxy John’s.

4. Valentia Island
Now, I’m going to go ahead and say that a trip out here was truly one of the best things in Kerry you can do (it’s just as quiet out there off season!)
This isle has a lot of history, only accessible by boat via the town of Portmagee and every inch along this route showcases the awesome landscape.
The photo on top will show you a view that awaits as You stand and look Around from the viewing point of Geokaun Mountain. So, now let’s move to our next spot!
Depending on where you are visiting the Skelligs, this is a nice little stop off if wondering what to do in Kerry nearby.
5. Killarney National Park
To this day, spending time in Killarney National Park is typical on lists of the best things to do in Kerry. Why? Well, a little bit of something for everyone that is.
At more than 102.9 km², the park has hundreds of miles of trails as well as historical sites and strications points to be seen. The best way to see it is with a bike that you can rent in the town and peddle around.
Aim for Ross Castle, first. Kerry Castle-This is a really impressive castle in Kerry. It is located right by the lake, and it stands tall.
Once you finish here head to the impressive Muckross House for the tour, then check out the stunning ruins of Muckross Abbey.
6. Rossbeigh Hill
There are not many things to do in Kerry that offer you a view as comparable to what you get from the hill walk at Rossbeigh.
Rossbeigh Hill Loop Walk 3 -4 hours Depending on Your fitness Level Rossbeigh hill loop walk Another fantastic view out over the surrounding countryside
Apart from the breathtaking view of Rossbeigh Beach that awaits you. Great place for a morning hike (You can drive it too!)
7. Ballaghbeama Gap
For those of you who like getting a little off the beaten path on your Kerry road trip, Ballaghbeama Gap is for sure worth pointing your nose toward.
Ballaghbeama slices the Iveragh Peninsula from its high central mountains. The journey follows an isolated scenic road where you will barely see any cars, few people but a lot of sheep and so many mountains.
Mam and I did this drive a few years ago, but we still talk about it. It’s a place to loiter and look across the hills forever standoffish from each residential space.
Great for those of you in search of things to do in Kerry this weekend away from the masses, it’s also a relatively easy-ish spin.
8. The Kerry Cliffs
I have been to the Kerry Cliffs 3 times over a number of years and each time there were only maybe one or two other people there.
At 305 metres high, the cliffs are renowned for their magnificent views of butterflies (Puffin Island) and surrounding countryside as well.
It is one of those places that puts you in your place and makes you realise mother nature is powerful.
You hear the waves collide with sharp cliff faces and that thunderous crash always echoing in your ears.
9. The Gap of Dunloe

The mountains here are the coldest in Ireland and as snow and ice moved into sured of further east via what is now called The Gap of Dunloe it eroded harder rock giving the peaks their unique points.
It was at this time that the Gap of Dunloe as it is today came into being.
Park your car near Kate Kearney’s Cottage and then follow the road from there to the rambler or biker, although it takes between 2-3 hours depending on pace.
10. Coomanaspig Pass
I actually stumbled upon this place by accident. Our trip to Kerry in October, it had been howling rain all day and as we drove into what I now know is Coomanaspig there was this sudden blazing sun.
See what I mean: (Patrick Semansky/Associated Press) Coomanaspig Pass is reputedly one of the highest drivable locations in Ireland
It’s a sharp hill if you are coming from the Kerry Cliffs. And at the peak of this hill, you can park it and take in a grand vista overlooking all that land around.
