Omkareshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga dedicated to Shiva Both temples are located on the Mandhata Island in Narmada River also known as Shivpuri at the middle of river narmada between Omkareshwar and Amareshwar Pakistan Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh.Even the Omkareshwar Island is named after its formation which looks like an add on to OM, a mystical word.
The legend says that Shiva divided the original image of himself into two halves hence is it believed one half remains in each temple.In addition to plains of temples, it has multitude shrines as well.
The island serves as the terrain utilised by philosopher Adi Shankaracharya (788-820), and there is also a cave for it.
